The central stem is surrounded by scale-like leaves (sheaths, left and right). At the base of the sheaths are the buds (round, deep purple-red) which will develop into branches. The smaller, inner circles are leaf traces. The central stem (lower centre) shows solid tissue (pink) at the nodes whilst the internodes are full of cavities (canals, white). Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres high.
