Antoine Francois Jean Claudet (1797-1867), French photographer. Born in Lyon, Claudet studied art before encountering Louis Daguerre. Claudet acquired a share in the Daguerrotype process, and moved to London to exploit the market there for the new wonder of photography. Claudet improved on the process by using chlorine instead of bromine in the formation of silver halides, giving them greater sensitivity. Claudet also invented the red-filtered Ã\safelightà for darkroomsas well as the photographometer, an early kind of exposure meter. In 1853 he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society, and was appointed Ã\"photographer-in-ordinaryà to Queen Victoria."
