Avalokiteśvara ("Lord who looks down") is a bodhisattva who embodies the compassion of all Buddhas. He is one of the more widely revered bodhisattvas in mainstream Mahayana Buddhism. In China he has somewhat evolved into the often female Guanyin or Guanshiyin.
