Heart-lung system, computer artwork. The heart (lower centre) is a hollow muscle that pumps blood around the body. Arteries, which carry oxygenated blood around the body, are red. Veins, which carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart and lungs, are blue. The large artery is the aorta, the large vein is the vena cava. The trachea branches into bronchi and then bronchioles (grey), bringing air to and from the lungs to allow gas exchange with the blood in the adjacent blood vessels. Also shown are the bones of the spine and rib-cage, with the spine at left. This view looks up the thoracic cavity towards the head.
