A Roman Janus-Faced Coin
The beardless head on this ancient Roman sextans, a coin worth one-sixth of an as, is that of Janus, the god of beginnings. The Romans depicted Janus with two heads, one looking forward and one looking backward. On his head is a pilleus, a close fitting felt cap that was worn at feasts and by slaves after manumission.
