19th Century view of Persepolis the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire (ca. 550–330 BCE), situated 60 km northeast of the city of Shiraz in Fars Province, Iran. After invading Achaemenid Persia in 330 BC, Alexander the Great sent the main force of his army to Persepolis and looted the city. It is not clear if the fire which destroyed Persepolis was an accident or a deliberate act of revenge for the burning of the Acropolis of Athens during the second Persian invasion of Greece. So, the destruction of Persepolis could be both an accident and a case of revenge.
