Pataxou girl wears a traditional headdress The tribe were driven from their forest in the 1940s and are trying to regain the right to live on their old land Pataxou Indian Reservation Bahia province Brazil. Commercial loggers and cattle ranchers have destroyed the forest animals his people used to hunt. After their land was stolen Pataxo indians went to town to find jobs and adopted Portuguse customs and clothing. Some stick to these but others are determined to re-assert their indian identity returned to their traditional land. They have been campaigning to establish a Pataxo indian reservation for their area and to regain rights over their land. Finally, in 2012, Brazil's supreme Court granted them rights over their area and asked ranchers to leave the area.
