Brief Biographical Sketches OF THE SIGNERS OF THE DECLARATION OF Benjamin Franklin, born in Boston in 1706, was bred a printer, andbecame agent in England for some of the Colonies. He was elected toCongress in 1775, signed the Declaration, and soon afterward went toFrance as American commissioner. He returned to his native countryin 1785, and died in Philadelphia in April, 1790. John Hancock, the great social and political leader in Massachusettsduring the Revolution, was born at Quincy, Massachusetts, in 1737. Hebecame a Boston merchant, was elected President of the ContinentalCongress in 1775, and held that position when the great Declaration wasadopted. He was afterward for many years Governor of Massachusetts,and died in 1814. Samuel Chase, of Maryland, was born in April, 1741, became an emi-_nent lawyer of Annapolis, and was chosen a member of the ContinentalCongress in 1774. He was afterward made chief justice of the supremecourt of Maryland, and
