California, on the23rd of September, 1873. He ob-tained his education in the publicschools, passing through the gram-mar and high school grades, andlater graduating from the StateXormal. He also took up the studyof law, and was admitted to practicein 1896. From 1892 to 1902 heserved as principal of schools inFresno, San Leandro and San Fran-cisco, his teaching experience cul-minating in his election as Superin-tendent of Schools in 1902. Heproved a competent and popular ofificial, but in 1905 resigned totake the position of District Attorney, to which he had been elected,having in the meantime made a vigorous and brilliant, though un-successful, campaign for Governor of the State as an indepe
