There was considerable interspecific variation in the structure of the semilunar membrane and pessulus of the species examined, with a number of trends evident. The burhinids, larids and pteroclids all had a large septum with a pessulus consisting of a number of pieces of cartilage. The pessulus of the Kelp Gull Lams dominicanus (Laridae — Fig. 12) also consisted of a number of cartilage pieces, although it was not possible to discriminate other features of this species' syrinx because of the dif-.
