In the First Quarto is a singular absence of thosepassages which throw light on Hamlets motives and mentalattitude. In the Second Quarto little is added in the way ofaction and incident; the enlargement is mainly in the contem-plative and imaginative parts, and here the difference betweenthe two editions is very great and of such a kind as to evincea most astonishing growth of intellectual power and resource. A reasonable theory of the relation of these two Quartos,and one widely accepted, is that the First Quarto representsin an imperfect form the first draft of Shakespeares play,and was printed from copy obtained surreptitiously, prob-ably from the notes of some shorthand writer,1 supple-mented
