EARLY FORTUNE CUCUMBER Cucumbers o£ the "White Spine" type arc most desirable. This variety was discovered in a field of "Davis Perfect" and is now so thoroughly established that large fields do not show- any variation either in plant or fruit. The Cucumbers are sHghtly longer than "Arlington White Spine," more cylindrical in shape, with very dark green skin and thick flesh, which is tender and crisp, making it especially good for slicing. The color is rich dark green with light striping at the end, and the fruits grow to a uniform size, measuring about seven inches in length and two inches thick when in good con- dition for use. It matures early and continues bearing for a long time, and the vines make such a healthy and vigorous growth that they produce a good crop even in a poor season, when many other varieties fail on account of unseasonable weather. It is a good variety to use while small for pickles, as the fruits are verj' firm. It is extensively used in Italy as a salad, and also may be ser\'ed boiled. When the enlargement of leaf stalk, at base of stem, is about the size of a hen's egg it should be earthed up so as to cover half of it, and in about ten days cutting for use may be commenced and continued as the plants increase in growth. The flavor is somewhat like celerj-, but it has a sweet taste and dehcate odor. Pkt., 10 c
