The sleek and powerful 21st century speedboat contrasts sharply with the dinghy and its rowers in period costume on Moelfre's annual Lifeboat Day on the Isle of Anglesey, UK. Moelfre's annual Lifeboat Day 2011 saw over 7000 visitors and locals watch the RNLI displays at the small Anglesey village of Moelfre, an event which later prompted Anglesey Tourism Association to present the volunteer organisers with its coveted Gold Award. The event raised £8,400 for the RNLI which is a registered charity and relies on donations to be be able to continue its work rescuing those in peril around UK coasts. The crowds were treated to displays of capsize training and a winching exercise, involving the all-weather and inshore lifeboats plus a search and rescue helicopter from nearby RAF Valley. Moelfre lifeboat station has provided a service since 1830, making it one of the first in the UK since the Royal National Lifeboat Institution was formed in 1824 and which now 236 such lifeboat stations.
