He went with Gen. Stephen to California in 1840, and was on his staffduring the Mexican war, when he was successivelymade captain and brevet -major. He was on theMexican and Californian border in 1848-53, andin those years was commissioner and astronomerto run the boundary between Mexico and theUnited States, especially under the Gadsden treaty. /frWAtotny of 1853. He was in Kansas in 1854, in Utah in1858, and remained on border duty till 9 May, 1861, when he resigned. He was reappointed aslieutenant-colonel of the 6th cavalry on 14 May,and he took part in the peninsular campaign, beingengaged at Yorktown, Williamsburg, and Han-over Court - House. He was made briga-dier-general of vol-unteers, 17 March, 1862, commandeda division underBanks in Louisianain 1863, and, hav-ing been raised tothe command of the19th corps, was withthe same command-er in 1864 in theRed river expedi-tion, in which hedisplayed unwontedbravery and skill,winning distinctionespecially at Sa-bine Cross - Roads,at Pleasant Hill, andat Cane River. Later in the same year, at thehead of the 19th corps, he offered a splendid andsuccessful resistance to Early in the Shenandoahvalley, especially at Opequan Creek, 19 Sept., atFishers Hill, 22 Sept., and at Cedar Creek in Octo-ber.
