The whole journey coversa distance of about 95 miles, which compared withthe old route is longer by 60 miles. The traffic be-tween Canton and the West River Valley is verygreat. At present there are many thousands ofsteam launches plying between Canton City and theoutlying districts, and more than half of that numberare carrying traffic to and fro on the West boat has to run 95 miles on each trip whereasif the channel between Samshui and Canton is im-proved, the distance would be only 35 miles.
