A manual of modern surgery : an exposition of the accepted doctrines and approved operative procedures of the present time, for the use of students and practitioners . ee Authors paper in Transactions of American Surgical Association, 1890. FRACTURES OF THE BONES OF THE FOREARM. 443 Fig. 220. case, error in diagnosis is impossible, if it is recollected that disloca-tion of the radio-carpal joint is exceedingly rare. The deformity ofthe fracture so resem-bles that of backwarddislocation of the carpusthat the fracture has attimes been called a dislo-cation. This error hasreceived apparent confir-mation from the fact thatafter the displaced lowerfragment is pushed intoposition there is littletendency, except in com-minuted fractures, to re-production of the de-formity. The transversecharacter of the breakand the absence of mus-cular displacing causesrender secondary displacement almost impossible unless the wrist issubjected to considerable violence. Symptoms.—The characteristic distortion of the usual fracture hasgiven the name silver fork fracture to the injury. The hand is apt tobe held semi-prone. Voluntary movements of the wrist are painful, and. Fracture of the lower end of the radius with anterior dis-placement. (Specimen of Mr. C. W. Cathcart in Museum ofRoyal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh.) Fig. 221.
