The entrance to thebay was guarded by mines, and these had to be de-stroyed before the transports could attempt to enterand approach the shore. These mines were formidableaffairs, French made and so constructed as to explodeforty-five kilograms of guncotton at a time from a mereforty-pound blow. In other words, a ship striking themwith the force equal to that blow would cause an ex-plosion sufficient to destroy the vessel and send mostof its human cargo into eternity. To clear the harbor of these dangerous obstructionswas the problem.
