Stonechat (Saxicola torquata), historical artwork. This small bird inhabits heathland and coastal areas in Britain and Europe. It is omnivorous, feeding on small invertebrates such as insects and spiders as well as fruits and seeds. This is a female stonechat: the male has a black head and a more strikingly red chest. The stonechat may reach a length of around 12 centimetres. This artwork was drawn by Archibald Thorburn (1860-1935).
