Oesophageal cancer. Light micrograph of an oesophageal cancer biopsy. This is an epidermoid cancer, a type of cancer that arises from the epithelial cells that line the oesophagus (gullet). At At left and right are large vacuoles (round) filled with the protein keratin. Symptoms of oesophageal cancer may include difficulty swallowing, weight loss and vomiting. Risk factors include smoking and alcohol consumption. Treatment is surgical removal of the tumour, often combined with chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Magnification: x180 when printed at 10 centimetres wide. Haematoxylin and eosin stain.
