Basilica : "Notre Dame des Miracles", composite building of the XIIth, XVIth and XIXth centuries. Castle : until 1993, everyone assumed that the Mayenne Castle was founded in the eleventh century. At that time, the great development took place which saw the birth of estates, including the castles of Laval and Château-Gontier. The interior work, carried out in July 1993 revealed brick arches hidden under the plaster. This method of construction is unknown in the eleventh century in the region, it is a method of construction related to the Carolingian period (eighth century-tenth century). Built to assert the power to face Carolingian Bretons and Normans, a palace, kept on three levels, has gradually been contained in defensive structures, becoming a real castle. Jusqu'en 1993, chacun supposait que le château de Mayenne avait été fondé au XIe siècle. À cette époque, eut lieu le grand développement des seigneuries qui vit naître, notamment, les châteaux de Laval et de Château-Gontier. Des travaux intérieurs, effectués en juillet 1993 ont fait apparaître des arcades en briques cachées sous les enduits. Ce mode de construction est inconnu au XIe siècle dans la région, c'est un mode de construction lié à l'époque carolingienne (VIIIe siècle-Xe siècle). Érigé pour affirmer le pouvoir carolingien face aux Bretons et aux Normands, un palais, conservé sur trois niveaux, a progressivement été enserré dans des structures défensives, jusqu'à devenir un véritable château fort.
