A gasoline engine is so constructed that by simply turning ona few lamps the storage battery suppliesa sufficient current for a long time, butif the battery becomes partly exhaustedor if more lamps are switched on thegasoline engine starts automatically andlights the lamps direct from the genera-tor and at the same time recharges thebattery. As the lamps are switched offthe engine stops itself, and the remain-ing lights are supplied by the battery un-til they are switched off. All the work necessary in keeping theapparatus in running condition consistsof filling a gasoline tank, filling a lubri-cating oil reservoir from which the run-ning parts are oiled by means of a pump,and keeping the plant clean.
