The Great Tower of Ilium 17 On the south side of the hill where, on account ofthe slight natural slope, I had to make my great trenchwith an inclination of 14 degrees, I discovered, at a dis-tance of 197 feet from the dechvity, a Tower 12 metres,or 40 feet, thick, which Ukewise obstructs my path, andappears to extend to a great length. I am busily en-gaged in making large excavations to the right and leftof it, in order to lay bare the whole; for, independentlyof the mightyinterest attachedto this Tower, Imust necessarilydig a channel toallow the watersof the winterrains to run off,as they wouldotherwise rushviolently downfrom my plat-form (197 feet inlength, and witha considerableslope) againstthe Tower andinjure it. I haveuncovered theTower on thenorth and south sides along the whole breadth of mytrench, and have convinced myself that it is built onthe rock at a depth of 14 metres, or 46^ feet. An elevated mass of calcareous earth 65^ feet broad. Objects Found in the Great Tower of Ilium. 1. Curious Terra-cotta Vessel in the Shape of a Mole. 2. A Sceptre-handle of the finest Crystal. 3. Vase Cover with a human Face. 4,5. Moulds of Mica-schist, for casting Metal Instruments. 6. A Trojan Dish with side Rings and Plates turned by the Potter. 7, 8,9. Terra Cotta Vases. 18 A Book of Famous Explorers and 16|- feet high rests upon the north side of theTower, and is evidently composed of the rubbish whichhad to be removed in order to level the rock for build-ing the Tower upon it. I have of course pierced thishillock, and have convinced myself that the north sideof the Tower, 16|- feet above the rock, does not consistof masonry, but of large blocks of stone lying looselyupon one another, and that only the upper part, abouta yard high, consists of actual masonry. This hillock, having the form of a rampart, thus serves to consoli-date the north side of the Tower, and renders it possibleto ascend to the top without
