Rocket test stand, Peenemunde, Germany. This rocket testing ground was established by the German military in 1937 to allow test flights over water. This is test stand number 1, one of several test stands built here. Rockets underwent static tests, and were then launched over the Baltic Sea (seen in background), and monitored from the coastline. The most famous of the missiles developed here was the A-4 rocket, better known as the V-2, which was used during World War II. The work carried out here laid the foundations for later work on space flight.
