WWI - A press portrait of W H S Hall, captain of P & O liner S S Persia lost with his ship when torpedoed without warning in the Mediterranean on 30 December 1915, by German U-boat U-38. The Persia built in 1900 by Caird & Company, Inverclyde, Greenock, Scotland. It was torpedoed and sunk without warning. She was sunk off Crete, while the passengers were having lunch, sinking in five to ten minutes, killing 343 of the 519 aboard including the Captain.
