John Heathcote. Portrait of John Heathcote (1783- 1861), British inventor of machinery for making lace. After developing his first lace machine in 1804, Heathcote turned his attention to devising a machine that could make the intricate \pillow lace\". He patented a machine in 1808, and in 1809 invented one which could make a type of net curtain (\"Brussels Lace\"). Heathcote manufactured his machines with a high standard of accuracy. Heathcote's lace-making factory was a success, but it was destroyed by protesters in 1816. He built another factory, & by making constant improvements to his machines amassed a large fortune, some of which he gave away as benevolent donations."
