Wool combing machine, 19th century. Illustration of wool being untangled and prepared for use by a combing machine, part of the mechanization of the textile industry. Wool combing machines arrange wool fibres in parallel strands. This combing machine was invented in the 1840s by Joshua Heilmann. Artwork from volume 8 (1868) of a republication of 'Les Grandes Usines', a multi-volume work on French industry by journalist and author Julien Turgan (1824-1887).
