Thingvellir Fissure Zone Iceland meeting of the North American Plate the Euro Asian Plate UNESCO World Heritage Site

Thingvellir Fissure Zone in Iceland where the North American Plate the Euro Asian Plate meet. Thingvellir is an immense geologic rift lying between two massive tectonic plates of the world- Eurasian and North American. The rift has provided Thingvellir with a most striking and ethereal beauty. One of the most beautiful places in Iceland, situated in south western region of the land, Thingvellir narrates the history of the island giving a far reaching picture of its people and geology. In 930 , a time when Europe was plunged in feudalism, the chieftains of Iceland gathered at Thingvellir to form the first parliament of the world called Althing. The chieftains kept meeting once in a while to carry on with administration. Thus Thingvellir earned its political importance and all through the ages till the present times all important national gatherings and celebrations are held there.
