'Funeral at Ornans', c1850, (1935). Creator: Giraudon.

'Funeral at Ornans', c1850, (1935). Mourners and priest at the funeral in September 1848 of Gustave Courbet's great-uncle in the painter's birthplace, the town of Ornans in eastern France. Photograph of 'A Burial at Ornans', painting made 1849-1850, in the Musée d'Orsay, Paris. The scale of the painting, 10 by 22 feet ( by meters), combined with the stylistic realism in the depiction of ordinary people, created an 'explosive reaction' when it was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1850-1851.
