. The anatomy and physiology of the human body. Containing the anatomy of the bones, muscles, and joints; and the heart and arteries. are quite transparent, their extreme branches are beautifullywhite, like vessels filled with chyle j or rather, one might be aptto mistake them for Air Tubes Of the way in which this function is performed, there mustbe more varieties than we can know or comprehend: this wemay safely conclude from the little that we do know, findingthe variety so very great. Almost all insects have their puncta like those of the Cater-pillar, ranged along the side, and inosculating like those ofthe Louse from branch to branch : often the puncta openalong the sides; but in place of inosculating from branch tobranch, all round one side, they inosculate across the belly, the one side communicating with the other. This is best ob-served in the small Worm from v/hich the Bee proceeds,(vide fig. 6, whicii is a magnified drawing of the Bee-worm.)And here it must be observed, that, as in other insects, al-ways the stigmata or breathing points correspond neatly withthe folds or rings while it continues a Worm, and with thescales or divisions of the body when it becomes a Fly; in theBee-worm also the inosculations answer to the flexures orjoints of the body.
