The speci-men was in fine condition and in almost perfectplumage. Above, dark brown and black, mot-tled with lighter browns and yellows; the wingcoverts a deep reddish brown,—burnt sienna isabout the shade. Below, yellowish and ashygray, paler on throat and belly; flanks and cris-sum with dusky brown bars; a brownish stripefrom the bill through the eye. Bill and eyesbrown; legs and feet pale yellow. In length. DZ -J < a,IX D THE PURPLE GALLINULE 241 some ten and one-half inches; extent about thir-teen inches. There are perhaps half a dozen records ofthe capture of this species on the North Amer-ican continent. THE PURPLE GALLINULE. (lonornis martinica.) Another distinguished southerner of rare oc-currence here. His habits, shape and generalappearance are much the same as those of themore common Florida Gallinule, but his mark-ings are more brilliant. His head, neck and un-der parts are a deep, purplish blue, shading onthe belly into black; sides and linings of thewings bluish green. Crissum white. Above,an olive green with a bluish cast on wing covertsand neck. Frontal shield blue; bill bright redwith yellow tip. Legs yellow. Length from tento twelve, extent about twenty-two inches.
