Biotechnology equipment. View of the laser beams in a flow cytometer, a device for identifying and separating cells. The target cells are marked using fluorescent dyes or antibodies which bind to specific sites. The cytometer may then identify the cells as they pass through its measuring chamber by the amount of fluorescence caused by the laser. This particular machine, developed at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (USA), can separate cells at a rate of up to 50,000 cells per second. This is of special benefit in cancer, immune system and chromosome research.
