Period of Occurrence: The earliest spring arrival date is 6 April, but most birds arrive about 15 April and remain until 25 June. The fall migration begins as early as 21 August, but the majority of birds arrives from the north around 7 September to 22 October, with a late date of 28 November. Most summer records are from Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira Refuge, where it nests sporadically. Breeding: The first known nesting was reported in 1962 by Zuvanich (1963) at Cheyenne Bottoms. He found several nests; clutch size averaged 3 eggs at 17 nests and 2 eggs at 3 nests. The eggs were laid in free-floating masses of vegetation, which could rise and fall with the level of water. Eggs have been recorded from 1 June to 12 August, but downy young have been noted as early as 10 June. An incubation period of 23 days has been recorded. The eggs have a light brown base.
