Pathology and Morbid Anatomy.—The patho-logical changes that take place in periodontitisare simflar to those that occur in inflammationof other soft tissues. After the injury, a tem-porary contraction precedes the dilatation ofthe blood-vessels and the acceleration of theblood flow. This is followed by retardation, and the blood current becomes progressivelyslower untU stasis is reached. Exudation oflymph, leucocytes and red blood-corpuscles. If theinflammation is slight, and not of bacterialorigm, the process may end at this stage inresolution, tjie membrane assuming its normalcondition after the lymphatics have takenup the exudation and the debris has beenremoved by the leucocytes. The inflammatoryprocess may end in resolution, suppuration, ororganization. In cases where acute local periodontitis is dueto trauma or chemical agents, and is of shortduration, the mischief commonly terminates inresolution, but if it follows septic infectionthrough bacterial products suppuration is theusual result. WTien the injury is slight, and oflow degree but prolonged, it leads to organiza-tion. Perforation of the waU of the root maybe very troublesome and resist all efforts attreatment. Should the inflammatory process continue, 489 the leucocy
