Coloured barium swallow X-ray of the upper chest of a 62 year old patient, showing a diverticulum (pouch) in the oesophagus. Oesophageal diverticula are small pouches formed when a weakness in the wall of the oesophagus causes the lining to bulge outwards. Food may collect in the pouch causing difficulty in swallowing and bad breath.
