Sideways seed shows gravitropism - the root curves to grow down and the shoot curves upward (see description below)

Corn, Zea mays, seedling recently germinated and illustrating gravitropism (geotropism). The seed was germinated in a sideways orientation and in the dark. Nevertheless, the root is curving and growing downwards (positive gravitropism) and the shoot upwards (negatice gravitropism). The emerging plant oriented itself correctly without any cue from the sun - it responded to gravity.
