GIOTTO di Bondone (b. 1267, Vespignano, d. 1337, Firenze) No. 3 Scenes from the Life of Joachim: 3. Annunciation to St Anne 1304-06 Fresco, 200 x 185 cm Cappella Scrovegni (Arena Chapel), Padua Although all the scenes from the life of Joachim have their memorable aspects, this particular scene is worth considering in detail. St Anne's house consists of a bare framework that is intended to indicate an actual house. It has been given the same concreteness as the buildings in the Assisi frescoes, but since it is the only one in the scene it acquires greater prominence and clarity. It is a symbolic house, and as such decidedly small for its inhabitants, as is demonstrated by the small window. But it is just this lack of room that underlines its concreteness and depth. The interior and furnishings of Anne's room are so beautifully described that their only counterparts are those in some of the Assisi frescoes. The only witness to the event is the servant, who sits out on the porch, spinning; the skirt of her dress is stretched between her knees, creating deep folds that heighten the actuality of her form. Her dress has the same tangibility as the cloak given away by St Francis in one of the scenes at Assisi, though it has been modified by a softer, thicker application of pigment. *** Keywords: ************* Author: GIOTTO di Bondone Title: No. 3 Scenes from the Life of Joachim: 3.
