Saint Columba, 521 – 597. Irish abbot and missionary Evangelist. The day before he died Columba feeling tired, sat down to rest beside a cross fixed into a millstone. Whilst there, a passing horse drew near to him, laid his head on the saint's breast and wailed loudly, Columba realised that the wise horse knew that he, Columa, was close to death. From The Book of Saints and Heroes, published 1912.
