The Liverpool and Manchester Railway opened on the 15th September, 1830 and provided the first ever scheduled inter-city passenger and freight rail service. This was hugely successful. By the end of the year it had carried 70, 000 passengers. In 1831 445, 047 passengers travelled on the line.
