Bright winters day on the locks at Johnson’s Hillocks on the Leeds and Liverpool canal in Lancashire.
Description (2000 characters) Two of the locks of the Johnson’s hillock flight of locks on the Leeds and Liverpool canal between Chorley and Blackburn. These are lock numbers 63 and 62 with the locks being numbered from the Leeds end, while the bridges along the canal are numbered from the Liverpool end. The Leeds and Liverpool runs for 127 and 3/4 miles from Leeds in Yorkshire over the Pennine hills to Liverpool on Merseyside. There are 91 locks on the canal some grouped into flights which makes the passage of boats along the canal more efficient. The locks raise or lower the canal over the hills and this flight consist of 7 locks and raises, or lowers the canal by 65 feet and 6 inches in the space of about ½ a mile. The Leeds and Liverpool locks are broad locks, being able to accommodate a barge or boat that is 14ft wide, but the locks east of Wigan are 60ft long, unlike the narrow, (7ft) ones of the midlands that are 70 feet long. This is an image made on a bright sunny winter's day when there was very little boat traffic, but it was nice walking weather.
