His father emigrated to the Northwestern ter-ritoiy, locating on the southern bank of the Ohioriver. When Joseph was twenty years old he re-moved north of the river and settled at Urbana. Heinvested his wages from farm work in a yoke ofoxen and several barrels of salt, traveling throughthe settlements selling salt tothe farmers. In 1803 he mar-ried Miss Lemen, of the war of 1813 hefought in Hulls army in thecampaign against Canada, andafter its conclusion obtained acontract to supply the northernarmy with provisions. He drovecattle and swine scores of milesthrough the forests on foot,bringing bread and other pro-visions on sleds and was a member of the legis-lature for four years.
