A collapsed wooden cabin and an abandoned farm wagon surrounded by weeds beneath an age-old tree are the only remains of an early homestead on this lonely prairie in Nebraska, USA. The United States Homestead Act of 1862 allowed anyone at least 21 years old to settle on 160 acres (65 hectares) of public land in the West without charge. In order to get title to that federal land grant, the homesteader had to reside on, improve and farm the acreage for five years.
