The play "The Man from the USSR"

The play "The Man from the USSR" was written in Berlin in 1927. There as well and its action takes place. Characters - the Russian immigrants, whose lives the writer is familiar. In the play - a synthesis of psychological dramas, comedies and detective intrigue. In the center of this intrigue, "a man from the USSR" - Alex Kuznetsov, and the whole performance has to wonder - what if he Soviet spy, or vice versa is struggling with this most of the USSR, or at all - a double agent. But mostly, though, here is the fate of Russian immigrants, their nostalgia, yearning, as says one of the heroes, "toschischa" for his homeland. It would seem that many plays, novels and short stories we read on the subject, how many watched the movie and television documentaries. And yet, and yet ... The plot is simple. After an eight-month stay in the USSR or in the "Three Socialist-Revolutionaries", as they call it the characters play, Alexei Kuznetsov, appears in Berlin, where his wife lives. He spends a few days in Berlin, at first did not even meet with her, the plant "to cover" a romance with film actress Marianne. Then he breaks with Marianne and again went to Moscow. His wife, Olga, in spite of everything continues to love him, and in the end of the play is their explanation sheds light on his actions. Some scenes take place against the background of the filming of Red Russia, a movie-kitsch, over which the author, and after him, and openly mock the theater. Yes, and the world of cinema, which was filmed as extras for meager wages involved many heroes play, presented here is quite parody. This session they called supernumerary. In "Sphere" daring dances to a rollicking tune waving red flags "extras" are quickly and enthusiastically. Theme of a movie, which arises here in that time is beginning to concern Nabokov. This shadowy world of "camera obscura", from which it is born, in which all turned inside out, where people - impersonal crowd, dutifully portraying the crowd.
