It is used for planing edges and narrow stock, and piecesnot too large can be trued and squared on it. The wood is held againstthe gauge and passed over the tableby hand so that the revolvingcutters (which are similar to thoseof the large planers) plane theunder side of the wood. Theknives are more or less exposed, and great care must be used. Thejointer is often used to make glue-joints. It must be kept carefullyadjusted for accurate work. Thegauge is adjustable to plane bevels. ^ 96. Moulding-machines are eitherhorizontal or irregular. The formercan be used for such work as gettingout matched boards, straight beading. Fig. 278 Therefore small diameter, rapid revolution, and steadiness of the cutter-head, with steadi-ness of feed, and firm holding of the stock, are essential to making this waviness as slightas possible. It can also be used for chamfering, beveling, rabbeting, tonguing, and grooving, beading, and moulding in various ways, tenoning, etc., by the use of different adjustmentsand cutters.
