The machine is. usually made so as to receive six 114 COTTON YARN MANUFACTURE laps. These are put side and each receives separate treatment, sothat a comber really consists of six separate heads coupled are each driven from the same source, but each in its action on thecotton is complete in itself. A description will therefore be given of Fig. So. The lap (Fig. 8i) rests on corrugated wooden lap rollers /, is unrolledb} their revolution, and then passes down a smooth metal trough to twofeed rollers L, K. These rollers have an intermittent motion, /. e., theyrevolve for a certain time and then remain stationary for a certain othertime. The manner in which they receive their power will be shown their revolution the end of the lap is pushed forward between twonippers T, R; to speak more correctly, the upper one T is called the nipperand the lower one R the cushion plate. After the feed rollers have fed ashort length of lap into the machine the} cease to move, and the nippercloses down upon the cotton, holding it tightly between itself and thecushion plate. The styles of the nipper and cushion plate are quite clearlyshown in the figure. The cushion plate is so called because its edge iscovered with leather, which does form a sort of cushion. Such an COMBING 11=; arrangement prevents injury to the cotton when it is
