On the right of the Balance the jackal-headed Anubis, god of the afterlife, is weighing the heart (conscience) of the deceased Ani against a feather which is symbolical of Law. Left of the balance is Shai, representing Destiny, followed by the two goddesses Renenit and Meschenit. Above them is the soul of Ani as a human-headed hawk. Seated on top of the balance is a form of the god Thoth as a small baboon. From the ''Book of the Dead, the Papyrus of Ani, Egypt ( BC) which consists of a number of magic spells assisting a dead person's journey through the underworld into the afterlife.
