The beauty of thewood, the high polish of which it was capable, andits fragrance, all recommended it foi- the Temple. The ancient cedar forests of Lebanon were of greatextent, and contained a vast amount of timber, butthey never recovered from the thinning made by Sol-omons 80,000 hewers; and they have been dwind-ling away for many centuries, until the words havebeen literally fulfilled: Lebanon is ashamed andhewn down; The high ones of stature sliall be hewndown, and the trees of his forest be few, that a littlechild may write them.
