In SouthernAlberta the growing of com takes to some extent the place in rotationthat summer fallow does. Light seeding and good cultivationdoes not exhaust the moisture unduly and puts the soil in good con-dition. The crop prevents blowing and furnishes fibre to thesoil. The variety of com most used is North-Western experiments with sunflowers for silage promise good high as fourteen or fifteen tons of green silage, which is abouttwice the amount of oats or com, can be grown from the MammothRussian Irrigating Alfalfa at Lethbridge In the best mixed farming parts of the province, consisting ofthe foothill country in Southern Alberta and the country betweenCalgary and Edmonton, timothy is a successful crop. Other tame grasses are Kentuckyblue grass, brome grass, rye grass, white, alsike, and sweet mixtures such as oats, barley and fall wheat are extensivelyused for hog pasture. Rape is a highly successful forage crop andis available earlier than in most places. On account of the coolnessof Alberta nights it does not suffer bleaching or wilting in midsummer.
