The epidermis consists of a layer of dead keratinised cells (orange), which act as a protective barrier, and an inner layer living cells (dark red). Below this is the dermis, a layer of connective tissue (pink), blood vessels and hairs (dark purple and orange, two at left). Below this are layers of muscle (purple and red).
