Silica microspheres, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). These tiny spheres are made of silica (silicon dioxide). They can be coated with other materials and used as targets in laser fusion research, which uses lasers to generate intense heat and compression in order to fuse atoms. Magnification: 300x when printed 10 centimetres across.
