Joint sovereigns of late 1600s England, King William III or William of Orange and his wife, Queen Mary II, depicted with spiky eyelashes and long fingers. Stained glass window by artist Willem van Konijnenburg (1868-1943) in the Nieuwe Kerk or New Church at Delft, South Holland, Netherlands. Willem van Konijnenburg was one of the leading Dutch visual artists who worked between 1924 and 1936 on designs for new stained glass for the Nieuwe Kerk.

Delft, South Holland, Netherlands: spectacular long eyelashes and fingers … William and Mary, joint Protestant sovereigns of England in the late-1600s, as they definitely were not in real life. Instead, the couple are as imagined by Willem van Konijnenburg (1868-1943), one of the leading Dutch visual artists who worked between 1924 and 1936 on designs for new stained glass for the Nieuwe Kerk or New Church in Delft. The artist portrayed King William III (1650-1702), widely known as William of Orange, and his wife, Queen Mary II (1662-1694), eldest daughter of William’s Roman Catholic predecessor, King James II, in the central panels of the window, surrounded by their advisers. Like Delft’s nearby Oude Kerk or Old Church, the Gothic Nieuwe Kerk, begun in 1396, lost all of its medieval glass in a devastating fire in 1536 and a massive gunpowder explosion in 1654 known as the Dutch Thunderclap. It took nearly three centuries for new stained glass to be installed and in the interim, the windows were partly bricked up and partly fitted with plain glass. The Nieuwe Kerk has been the burial-place of members of the Dutch royal family, the House of Orange-Nassau, since 1584. William, Prince of Orange, invaded England in the Glorious Revolution of 1688 and he and Mary then ruled as joint monarchs until her death in 1694. They are both buried in Westminster Abbey, London.
